Description:
Chapter 10 of "Developing Orthographies for Unwritten Languages," Publications in Language Use and Education 6. Some chapters of this book were presented as papers at the LSA Symposium in 2011.
In our collaborative work documenting and describing the Tibeto-Burman language Kurtöp, we considered many linguistic and non-linguistic factors. While the adaptation of a Roman-based orthography was relatively straightforward, the application of the 'Ucen (Tibetan-like) script to Kurtöp posed many challenges. This chapter discusses the factors which we considered and the difficulties we encountered in applying 'Ucen, a script originally devised for an older variety of Tibetan.
